This was because they were saying, 'An unclean spirit is in him.'

Observation

To mistake the spirit of God for an unclean spirit is to turn as far from God as it is possible to.

Application

It's hard to believe that God would never forgive anything, but that's what the passage seems to say. Accusing God of being the devil is unforgivable. Perhaps even here there is hope if we come to recognise God's spirit, but this is a strong warning not to falsely judge what is God's actions as the devil's. So, we should be very careful in condemning what we do not understand.

Prayer

Lord, help me to clearly recognise your spirit at work. Save me from rushing to judgement and this condemning myself.
