Wednesday of the 2nd Week of Ordinary Time 2022

Scripture Mark 3:1-6

Then he said to them, ‘Is it against the law on the sabbath day to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?’ But they said nothing. Then, grieved to find them so obstinate, he looked angrily round at them, and said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He stretched it out and his hand was better. The Pharisees went out and at once began to plot with the Herodians against him, discussing how to destroy him.

Observation

Jesus again teaches about the sabbath. It is for people and is not an excuse for failing to help people when they need it. The Pharisees are angry becuase they have put their strict, legalistic interpretation above God and Jesus is pointing out the hypocrisy in that.

Application

Are there times when I too use God and scripture as an excuse to avoid helping others? Do I use my religious beliefs as a way to control others or to justify treating them poorly?

Prayer

Lord, help me to always be aware that love is at the heart of what you want from us. Love of you certainly, but love for other people as well. Not strict adherence to legal codes, but service and love of other people. Rules are important but people are more important. Amen.
